Just so you have something to read when we direct you to the blog...

Ah, the awkward first blog post. As the reader, you’re poking around trying to decide how much interest you have and how much effort you're willing to put into this. You may be asking yourself, “Am I really ready for this commitment? This could be six months of my life!“ Maybe we should just slow down and take it one post at a time. No obligation.

Since the real commitment doesn't start until April 3rd, let's take this time to get better acquainted. We're Brian and Kelly, and after 10 months of dating we've reached that inevitable we-should-hike-2,180-miles-together-for-no-apparent-reason phase of the relationship. While most couples ignore this phase, we have chosen to embrace it.

As of April 3rd, we will carry on our backs everything that we need to survive for 6 months. We will get tired, sore, hungry, grumpy, and smelly. We will succeed and triumphantly stand atop Mount Katahdin in Maine, or we will fail and find something equally interesting to fill our time and blog.

We plan to keep you posted every step of the way. So no pressure, but If you’re interested, you know where to find us.

Brian & Kelly

  1. Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.

    -Sir Winston Churchill

We look forward to adventuring vicariously through you both here. We both wish you all the best and envy you to no end.

  2. "Continuous effort -- not strength or intelligence -- is the key to unlocking our potential."

    - PM Winston Churchill

    One Churchill quote begets another.

Your journey through the mountains will undoubtedly require such unceasing effort, but there are few people other than you capable of such a feat.

With the wind at your back, the sun on your face, and the undying fortitude of a man on a mission, it will not so much be a couple faced with two thousand miles of nature's impervious obstacles, but instead a mountainous range boiling over with fear in the face of their conquistadors: a couple fueled by sheer ambition and prodigious appetite on a ceaseless mission to vanquish God's ancient creations. Like the pioneers and settlers before you who pursued and prevailed in "Manifest Destiny," no mountain is too high or valley too low to keep you from your ultimate goal.

So assuage your anguish and allay your fears, for it is the majestic mountains who tremble in your presence -- and they very well should.

  3. An Old Irish Blessing
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
    And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Our hearts will be with you on this journey!
